Bitcoin’s hash rate is defined by a small set of protocol-level terms with precise technical meanings.

Hash rate is measured in hashes per second (H/s). The suffixes shown on the tracker and chart are standard metric prefixes, each 1,000 times the one before.

How Bitcoin hash rate is estimated
Bitcoin’s network hash rate is inferred from how quickly blocks are found against the pace the current difficulty target assumes, roughly one block every 10 minutes.
Blocks arriving faster than that pace imply more hash power is active than difficulty accounts for. Slower arrivals imply the opposite.
The tracker displays two versions of that estimate: the current hash rate, calculated from a short recent window, and its 7-day average. A single block’s timing is naturally noisy, so the current figure can swing sharply between updates.
The 7-day average smooths that noise into a steadier read of the underlying trend, and both figures update automatically as each new block confirms.
The relationship between Bitcoin hash rate and difficulty
Hash rate and difficulty move together, but hash rate leads and difficulty follows.
Total hash power can shift block by block as miners power hardware on or off. Difficulty only updates at each 2,016-block retarget, roughly every two weeks.
That gap means the difficulty figure shown above reflects hash power from the epoch that just closed, not this exact moment.
When new hash power joins the network, blocks get found faster than the 10-minute target until the next retarget catches up. When hash power leaves, blocks slow down until the following retarget lowers difficulty to compensate.
